Part and whole
Vyastisamastih
This sutra uses the 'part and whole' strategy to simplify calculations involving groups of numbers. By choosing a convenient base (the assumed average), you work with small deviations instead of large numbers, making mental math much easier.
How It Works
- 1.Choose a convenient base value close to all numbers in the set.
- 2.Calculate the deviation of each number from the base.
- 3.Sum all the deviations — positive and negative will often cancel out.
- 4.Average = base + (sum of deviations ÷ count).
- 5.This avoids adding large numbers together.
Examples
Average of 41, 43, 47, 49
Step 1 / 4
Find the average of: 41, 43, 47, 49. Pick a round number near the middle as the base.
